 Process

Initial Sketch

After initial consultation, I will start with rough sketches of the general form of the piece and define its shape and appearance.

Define Dimensions

From there I will elaborate those sketches and define dimensions of the piece and its components. The function of the piece and the space where it will go are the driving factors in the dimensioning (comfortable height of a dining table, how many people it will seat, space constraints in the room where it will go etc.) The proportioning of the components depends both on strength and aesthetics.

Select Wood

From there I will seek out and select the wood for each component of the piece. This typically entails sorting through piles of rough sawn lumber examining the grain, defects, cut and characteristics of each board to find the pieces that are right for each component.

Begin Milling

Once the wood has been selected fabrication begins. The first step is milling where I take the rough boards and machine them down to a specific thickness width and length.

Fabricate

From there each piece is shaped using a wide variety of tools and processes to turn them into the components of the piece. This includes shaping curves, cutting tapers, and cutting joints.

Join Pieces

The next step is to join the pieces together into their final form and finish the wood (sanding, planning, and scraping) until the wood gets to the desired smoothness, texture, and appearance.

Finish

Finally, I will select and apply the finish to protect and highlight the natural beauty of the grain and unique characteristics of the wood.

 Made-by-Hand

To me, the term hand-built can refer to the use of both manually powered hand tools (hand-saws, chisels and planes) as well as electrically powered machines. Even when using machines to cut wood, there is a great deal of manipulation and set-up of the machine to achieve the desired cut and I am manually moving the piece of lumber through the machine. I do not use CNC or other automated processes that are driven by a computer program.
